Disaster at St Pierre after Mt Pelee eruption leaves 49,000 dead and five mile radius devoid of life. Harbor ships destroyed and bodies in the water. Fire, lava and ground upheaval obliterate houses as Fort de France nearby seen as escape route before final upheaval.
In Scranton Pennsylvania on May 3 a general strike of anthracite region miners was ordered for Monday with a convention next Wednesday to decide permanence. Executive committees weighed arbitration rejection by railroad presidents and mine operators and prepared a decisive vote.
Special forecast for New England calls for fair and cool weather Saturday and Sunday with diminishing northwest to north winds. Storm warnings extend from Sandy Hook to Eastport. The report notes Boston area as fair and cool with coastal winds shifting weekendly. An unrelated consumer testimonial mentions Father John’s Medicine from Newark, New Jersey.
The Prentis family of Melrose, U.S. consul at St Pierre, Martinique, may have perished when Mt Pelee destroyed the city. A sister-in-law notes a warning letter mentioning plans to sail on the schooner Anna B Morse if danger grew. The couple’s whereabouts are uncertain, with a cable anticipated if they escape.
The Suchet commander reports that at 1 o clock Thursday the entire town of St Pierre was engulfed in flames. About 30 people were saved from harbor vessels but survivors were unreachable ashore. He saw heaps of bodies on wharves amid likely total resident loss. The governor and staff are believed dead. Roddam crew suffered many fatalities and injuries.
A Reuters despatch from Kingston Jamaica reports thousands killed at St Pierre as panic raged during the May 3 eruption. Lava flowed to May 7 while St Vincent sees activity from the Soufriere and frequent earthquakes with no reported damage yet. The British cruiser Indefatigable sailed in response to Governor Llewellyn.
New York agents of Quebec Steamship Company received a St Lucia cablegram stating Boralma is lost after an earthquake eruption last night. Milling machinery worth 22000 dollars aboard the Red Cross Steamship Company vessel was on board. Talisman owners reported limited St Thomas communication and suspected her fate but no confirmation yet.
The Ocean Traveller, a British schooner from St John Nova Scotia, arrived at Dominica at 3 pm after fleeing St Vincent on May 7 due to a heavy sand fall from an erupting volcano. The crew attempted to reach St Lucia but were compelled to seek shelter elsewhere.
