A dramatic incident at Bertrand involves a large house sweeping over a dam while another structure, a bridge section, breaks away. Bystanders report a narrow escape as debris and water flood the river, with no serious injuries confirmed.

Benjamin Clark Godfrey of Limington Maine was captured in Portland after allegedly robbing Limington town treasurer Leonard J Strout on December 2. The 27 year old felon boasted of quick trigger and prior prison time. Detectives Brooklyn Newbegin and Deputy Sheriff Plummer traced the crime through the confessed thief John Freeman, leading to Godfrey's arrest and handcuffing.
The remains of William Astor arrived in New York from Paris aboard the steamer La Bourgogne. The widow Mrs Orme Wilson and Mrs J Coleman Drayton, plus son-in-law Orme Wilson, accompanied them to Trinity Chapel mortuary. Funeral services are set for next Thursday at Trinity Chapel with Rev. Dr. Morgan Dix officiating.
Loxton May 8. The introduction of Dr. Vaughan as archbishop of Westminster to succeed Cardinal Manning occurred at the pro-cathedral this morning. All the canons and many bishops assisted and a great crowd attended. The newly created archbishop delivered an address.
Early today the schooner Minnie Taylor, en route from St John to New York with lumber, was struck by the steamer F H Wise towing barges Nos 65 and 56 off Vineyard Haven Massachusetts. The vessel flooded amidships but was towed in and will be patched by divers before it sails again.
Malden police seek Clifford Savory of 12 Green Street after he stole a $500 team from J P Parker and traded the horse in Melrose for cash and another horse, later selling the team in Wakefield. He had borrowed and sold Geo Hosmer’s horse for $200 two weeks earlier. Savory is found to have three wives, one at 12 Green Street, Malden, another on Marshall Street in Maplewood, and a third in Melrose. he formerly resided in New Brunswick and is thought to have left for that province.
Ellen Smith Berham aged 50 was found beside a Wakefield stone wall with head crushed by a large stone. Her husband Solomon Berham aged 60 is held on suspicion of murder, asserting innocence and blaming neighbor Mrs James Rice amid a night of drinking.
A dynamite explosion wrecked the residence of district notary Papp in Versecz Hungary. The blast blew the roof into the air and shattered windows in nearby buildings. A Roumanian suspect has been arrested in connection with the incident.
Philadelphia May 8 The time for depositing the securities of the Poughkeepsie Bridge Company with Fidelity Trust Company under the reorganization plan expired yesterday More than the necessary majority has been deposited and the Reading railroad will take possession to operate it with Central New England and Western railroads
A.M. Littlefield's steam sawmill in Saco Maine was destroyed by fire early today. The blaze, likely incendiary, left only the engine and boiler, with a total loss estimated at $3000 and insured for $2500.
