A Canadian Pacific westbound sleeper and dining car derailed ten miles east of St. Paul after track spreading. Dining car conductor Charles Ford seriously injured. a Garden River Jesuit priest leg broken. Over twenty passengers hurt. five doctors from St. Paul tended the injured as the train arrived ten hours late.
Near Bangor forty miles west of Birmingham on the Louisville and Nashville railroad a freight train broke in two and ran back into the one following. The engine and several cars were wrecked and burned with heavy loss. An unknown white tramp was killed and three other tramps badly hurt. Engineer J H Hair, on his first trip after his wedding, sustained serious injuries.
Brockton carpenters end a strike for a fifty cent daily raise begun May 1. Workers seek reinstatement at old pay, while some employers refuse. The move ends the walkout in the city as contractors consider filling positions with new workers.

New York May 8 The jury in the August Elbogen case, a dramatic agent accused of kidnapping young girls and sending them to New Orleans for immoral purposes, returned a verdict of guilty this forenoon. Elbogen was remanded for sentence.
The Newfoundland Assembly met to denounce the Knutsford coercion bill and adopted resolutions opposing it amid public excitement. London reports say Lord Knutsford resumed talks with Newfoundland delegates. a memorial draft bill may be approved for quick passage by the Colonial Legislature before Whitsun, awaiting the cabinet reply.
In London May 8, the South Dorset by election results show Conservative Brymer defeating Gladstonian Edgcumbe by forty votes, 3278 to 3238, to fill the seat left by the death of Conservative Lt Col Hampre. Libs gain 752 votes since the last election, Tories drop 199.
London reports flu cases in major hospitals averaging about 100 per institution with signs of the epidemic rising. Several Commons members missed sessions as the illness spread among officials including the Earl of Powis who died last night with cause undisclosed. In Sheffield the illness abates somewhat while provinces remain affected and public figures are noted as easily struck by overwork.
The Novoe Vremya says the Rothschilds pressed for Hebrew treatment in Russia during the 3 percent loan talks in Paris, but Vyshnegradsky rejected the demand. The article notes Russian securities weakness, 353 million roubles in foreign banks, and potential internal debt conversion despite possible delays by the Rothschilds.

The Italian government plans to address a circular to European powers to judge U S conduct in the New Orleans affair. Italy would push an international agreement to require the United States to guarantee protection for foreign subjects.
A deputation met with Chancellor Goschen to press a universal penny rate across the British empire. Goschen replied that lowering rates was impossible, noting the government already lost £27866 in four months from a colonial postage reduction.
London reports from the Board of Trade show April imports up by 3.3 million pounds and exports up by 570 thousand pounds compared with April last year. It also reveals wheat imports for the eight months ending April 30 were underestimated, with actual supply exceeding official figures by over 600 thousand quarters.

London May 8 Madame Helena Petrovna Blavatsky the well known Theosophist is dead. She founded the Western Theosophical movement after a life of travel and study in Russia South America India and America. Her death leaves Theosophy to continue under the guiding principle of universal brotherhood beyond any one leader.
Trinity College graduates in Boston met to form an alumni association. Rev. Dr. George Washington Smith, Trinity president, spoke on funds rising by 250000 with 150000 more anticipated and praised alumni support. Officers named: President J Gardner White, VPs W C Peters John H Hubbell, Treasurer Edmund S Clark, Secretary G Winthrop Sargent, exec committee R Fuller C W Dyer W F Morgan Jr. A committee was named to discuss a proposed university club in Boston.
