President Wilson planned to write another note to Germany after a White House conference with Secretary Lansing. The German reply pledges to suspend illegal submarine warfare but leaves the overall submarine issue uncertain and unsatisfactory.
A 14th Cavalry detachment is attacked at Glenn Springs Texas near the Mexican border. Three troopers and a civilian are killed, two soldiers wounded, one captured, and reports say two prisoners were slain while residents pursue the raiders.
London dispatch notes a new German push toward Verdun from northeast and northwest sectors. French official communications record gains in some sectors while other attacks were repulsed with heavy German losses. Military actions include heavy artillery along the Meuse region and Russian and Turkish engagements in Courland and the Caucasus.
The article reports that if another ship with American citizens is sunk by a German submarine in breach of international law, relations would be severed immediately once facts are set, with no further communications. President Wilson studied the German note all day, and Secretary Lansing reviewed it at Annapolis before being summoned to the White House.
Mrs Raymond Dalton formerly Miss Margaret Brown heir to Gloucester's second wealthiest family returned with her drug clerk husband after eloping to Providence. The Brown parents, W G Brown and wife, left town and will plead with their son in law to be acceptable. Dalton, from Arlington, worked two years at J H Rogers drug store. The bride, a Gloucester High School graduate, was to plead for parental reconciliation.
R A Case of Galena near Kinghamp ton hung head downward for two days after a tree trimming accident. Rescued and revived, physicians say he has a fair chance to recover as of May 1 in Kingston ton Nova Scotia.
Secretary Tumulty stated for the President that the administration had no role or suggestion in canceling the Lusitania memorial meeting planned for New York on the first anniversary of the sinking. The remark refutes reports of presidential involvement.
Miss Pauline Mae Follansbee of 67 Crescent Street Malden wins a prize in the Church Peace Union annual essay contest announced from New York. Her essay titled The Substitution of Law for War promotes legal settlement over armed conflict.
Miss Follansbee, secretary to Mrs. Fannie Fern Andrews of the American School Peace League and a 1907 Malden High School graduate, learned of her win last night from the Post. She joined other winners including Rev. Washing Gladden and Henry Hoffe in the Group III contest for church members 20 to 30. The Church Peace Union, founded by Andrew Carnegie in 1914 with a 2 million endowment, promotes international peace through churches.
Pope Benedict names Monsignor Charles A. O'Hern vice rector and coadjutor to Monsignor Thomas F. Kennedy at the American College in Rome with the right to succeed. The appointment honors Kennedy whose health has waned.Baltimore New York Boston and Philadelphia archbishops approved the move. O'Hern is a popular American cleric and ally of Cardinal O'Connell.
Dublin reports that Countess Georgiana Markievicz was sentenced to death by court martial but the sentence was commuted to life penal servitude. Henry O Hanrahan’s death sentence was also commuted to life imprisonment. Lewis Harcourt named to succeed Augustine Birrell as chief secretary for Ireland.
George Plunkett and John Plunkett brothers of Joseph Plunkett who was executed last week have had death sentences commuted to ten years penal servitude. Count Plunkett the director of the National Museum of Science and Art in Dublin and his wife are noted for philanthropy and art. an official statement lists other commutations and notes a 1000 prisoners leaving Dublin for England as Sinn Fein hand in period.

An Exchange Telegraph dispatch from Dublin reports the death sentence on Philip Cosgrave from a court martial of Irish rebels has been commuted to five years in prison. Thirteen other defendants receive three years each.
Salem New Hampshire May 7 A motor vehicle overturned in a ditch near the Rockingham race track killing Mrs Harriet Mahoney 19 of Haverhill Massachusetts and injuring several others including Mrs Margaret Gauvin of Haverhill and residents from Cambridge Brockton Everett and Manchester A Lawrence man John W Donovan 203 Park Street Lawrence was driving and held for investigation by local authorities
In a National Zeitung interview American ambassador James W. Gerard says he values removing misunderstandings between Germany and the United States and has worked to avoid conflict. He asserts he desires no war and rejects charges that he hates German people. The Tages Zeitung and many papers publish the interview, whose Vienna edition reproduces the full text.
Mexican bandits crossed the Rio Grande into Brewster county Texas raiding Glenn Springs and Boquillas. They burned a wax plant and a store, killed three U S Cavalry troopers, wounded several, and captured others including a storekeeper. A 10 year old boy was killed at the wax plant. The raid paused high level talks with Obregon Carranza and Villa factions as U S forces prepare to act.
Reports from the remote region describe a surprise attack on the Glenn Springs settlement. General Funston states three soldiers and a boy were killed, three wounded, and two taken prisoner out of nine troopers stationed there, amid unclear totals for dead and captured.
Forecast notes for northern New England show partly cloudy conditions Monday with cooler weather except eastern Maine, then Tuesday should be fair and warmer inland. Southern New England expected to be fair Monday and Tuesday with warmer interior areas.
Two firemen were injured and over twenty others were hurled by air blasts as they forced entry into a blaze on the first floor of a six story brick building at 49 Purchase Street. Frank J. Galvin suffered a wrist injury. Ladderman Crawley had a cut arm. Both were taken to Relief Hospital. The fire confined to the first floor where American Iron & Metal Company occupied space.
A passerby spots a red glow from the first floor and alerts Pro tective Company No 1 across the street. Firefighters force entry but a hot air explosion drives them back, injuring Galvin and causing a second blast. Twenty men are knocked off their feet. Ludderman Crawley is the only one hurt. The blaze leaves the first floor destroyed while the second floor houses the Benjamin Preston Printing Machine Company, with damage in the thousands.
Dorchester girl and prize winning beauty Miss Sadie Sadowski will be chief guest at the Screen Club’s first annual dance in Constitution Hall. A fox trot contest for a $10 prize and New England championship is planned. Organizers include President T. J. Giblin Chairman J. J. Managan and Leo Manthaur.
Detroit beat St. Louis 2 to 1 and Cleveland defeated Chicago 5 to 2 in American League play. In the National League Pittsburg triumphed over Chicago 1 to 0 while St. Louis edged Cincinnati 1 to 0.
