The Franconia rescued Captain McDonald and 18 crew members from the Columbian after a Sunday night fire. Survivors, exhausted and dazed, received care from ship doctors and passengers as searchers scoured the Atlantic for the missing third boat and remaining crew of sixty. Started In Bunkers Former Engineer Feels Blaze Caused Explosion
Fourth Engineer Stanley Partington of the Leyland liner Winifredian, now in port after the Columbian disaster, says a smouldering fire in coal bunkers likely sparked the explosion that destroyed the Columbian. He arrived from Liverpool with the Winifredian and knew the burned vessel's engines well. He notes the blasts were from fire, not the other way around, and recalls missing men and his late chief engineer.
