Medford Tragedy as Highwayman Kills Nellie Sturtevant

Miss Nellie Sturtevant daughter of J S Sturtevant treasurer of Medford Co operative Bank was shot in front of her Chester avenue home while shielding her father from a highwayman. The attacker fled toward Boston on a bicycle and Miss Sturtevant died within an hour from the brain wound.

Would Adopt Man of 60 In Probate Court Case

In probate court today an unusual matter involves two men aged 61 and 60. The elder seeks to adopt the younger to make him heir to his property, citing no clear reason beyond a lifelong friendship. The elder man is married with no children to inherit.

John Cleary of Roxbury was found floundering in the river beneath the Congress Street Bridge late last night. The 47 year old man said he fell off the bridge and was rescued, his home address listed as 96 Harrison Avenue with his wife.

Father's Own Story of Bank Murder Revealed

Mr Sturtevant, father of the murdered girl, spoke by telephone this morning detailing the motive and sequence of events. He said he and his wife visited a bank meeting, returned home, confronted the assailant near their door, and that Nellie was fatally shot as she rushed the gunman with her umbrella. He suggested the attacker knew their banking role and believed money was inside. The killer fled on a bicycle, and the father hopes the suspect is captured, though he laments justice cannot restore his daughter.

Mr Sturtevant of Medford reports his daughter was shot last night. He could not identify the killer due to darkness and excitement. He estimates the suspect at about five feet six inches, stocky, stooped, wearing a dark coat.

Murder at Medford Bank Treasurer Sturtevant Fatally Attacked

Mr. Sturtevant, treasurer of the Medford Co operative Bank, closed the bank after 10 pm on Wednesday. He and his wife and daughter left for home around 11 pm, reaching his residence by 11:30. A small bag with bank books but no cash was taken inside, funds remaining in the bank safe.
