In a district letter readers are told final figures for oversubscription of the third Liberty Loan are due by May 13. New England compares its standing with other districts as officials await nationwide totals of the 17,000,000 in bonds bought.
Miss May Blanc and Miss Bessie Eddy, hotel waitresses from Northfield Mass, were thrown from a car into the Ashuelot River in Winchester N H and drowned after a collision with another vehicle. Four other occupants of the car escaped with minor injuries. The other car was driven by Harry Mosher of Keene and caused no injuries to its occupants.
Austrian Emperor and high commanders reach the Teuton front in Italy as a new offensive begins. Allied forces have anticipated a blow and expect the Teutons to launch a desperate effort to smash through the Piave line.
Vienna reports Emperor Charles and senior officers reached the Italian front yesterday. The move coincides with troop movements in the Tyrol and Trentino and is interpreted as signaling the long-predicted offensive on the Italian front may soon begin.

The Right Rev. Franklin Hamilton bishop of the Pittsburg district of the Methodist Episcopal Church died at his Pittsburg home at 2 PM from pneumonia. Born August 9 1866 in Pleasant Valley Ohio he earlier led First M E Church Boston Temple Street for eight years and held posts including chancellor of the American University in Washington and vice president of the Epworth League. He was elected bishop May 2 1916 at Saratoga Springs and was brother to Bishop John W. Hamilton.

May 5 report from the Associated Press says German forces again tried to occupy a former American trench in the Bois Brule near Apremont in the Toul sector. The assault followed earlier fighting on April 10 and 12 and was countered by American troops despite rain delaying attacks.
London May 5 Field Marshal Viscount French has been appointed lord lieutenant of Ireland succeeding Baron Wimborne who served since 1915. French once led the British expeditionary forces in France and Belgium at the war’s start and was named commander in chief of the home forces in 1916. He is a knight of the Order of St Patrick.

A large collie attacked two people in West Roxbury yesterday afternoon causing a brief panic. Six year old William L. Anderson Jr. was bitten on the hand while Mrs. Helen J. Martell was bitten multiple times on arm and hand. A bicycle-riding boy escaped uninjured. The dog was shot by a policeman and its head will be examined by Harvard medical experts.
In Marlboro on May 5 two children of Mr and Mrs James P Steele aged four and two died from arsenical poisoning. Authorities investigate the source while two older Steele children remain unharmed. Neighbors suggest the youngsters may have found something outdoors as no arsenic was reported at home.
Two children in Marlboro died after sudden illness Saturday. Robert died at 2 AM and Katherine about 10 AM. Dr. Charles L. Cutler treated them and ruled arsenical poisoning. He investigated toys food and candy but found no clear source, noting rubbish barrels from spring cleanup as a possible origin. Mr. Steele, former Marlboro Board of Trade president, is a noted hay and grain man.
