Washington May 3 Simultaneously with the call of 233,000 men from 45 states to join the colors on May 25 Secretary Baker submitted an army expansion plan for the year starting July 1. The program envisions an army of 3,000,000 men and costs near 16 billion dollars, with Baker noting figures imply limits and promising to call out enough men to gain victory.

May 3 Holyoke nurse Miss Mike I Butterworth who shot and killed George A Elliott a Holyoke druggist on April 5 died in York street jail after wrapping herself in blankets and setting them on fire in the bathroom. She died at a hospital two hours later.
In Holyoke a 29 year old woman, Miss Butterworth, burned in a jail bathroom fire after being despondent over a grand jury appearance next week. Earlier on April 4 she fired five shots at Elliott on Holyoke streets. one fatal. She attempted suicide but was prevented by bystanders.
Berlin reports in a German military communique that in southwestern Finland a five day battle near Lakhti and Tavastus ended with an overwhelming German victory and the capture of 20 000 prisoners. The Western front area remains quiet.
