Beef Shipments Drop Across City Market
A sharp decline in beef shipments to the city occurred in the last days of the week with only 12 carloads arriving. For the week ending May 18 shipments totaled 138 cars, down from 146 last year, while the week ending April 26 had 149 cars, down from 154. Last week brought 127 cars versus 154 a year ago. Dealers report ample meat in Boston and attribute the drop to weaker demand as consumption runs about 70 percent of six to eight weeks ago. Prices fell on choice cuts, with sirloin down to 16 cents a pound. rib roast also eased. Rueno steak held, corned beef and cheaper cuts stayed near, and many dealers expect a pickup next week. A prominent wholesaler noted curtailment was driven by lack of demand, asserting sufficient supply to meet current demand and improved business overall.
