Boston Law Battles Over Board of Apportionment and Sewers

Captain Weaver of the Fifth Massachusetts anddetachments mustered out several regiments including the First Heavy Artillery and Ninth Regiment. He leaves Boston with fond memories and plans to retire nearby, praising Massachusetts militia for its excellence and service.

Massachusetts naval militia drills set for September cruises

The Navy Department fixed drill dates for the Massachusetts naval militia from September 6 to 14 and September 15 to 23, with Boston as the departure port. About 700 militiamen will participate in two groups of 350 aboard the Prairie, spending eight days at sea with limited harbor time. Ammunition allotments include forty eight rounds for six-inch guns and 3% rounds for six-pounders, plus sub-calibre ammo at command discretion. Secretary Long loaned the converted yacht Inea to the Massachusetts militia.

Legislature Passes Bills on Street Work and Canal Company

The senate debated and sent several measures to engrossment. A motion to order to a third reading failed 64 to 51. A perfecting amendment to replace Tremont and Boylston street car tracks was postponed until Monday. The wide tire bill passed to be engrossed. Street construction bills for Boston were postponed to next Thursday. A harbor and public lands bill limited Plymouth county towns from excess costs for the Acushnet River bridge relocation. A bill to form the Boston Cape Cod New York Canal Company with an $8 million capital and $25,000 for Sandwich and Bourne was reported, with a route via Bourne and Sandwich. The governor appointing militia examining boards was hotly debated and finally engrossed with amendments.

Langley To Trial New Flying Machine at Quantico

Smithsonian secretary Professor Langley will conduct a trial of his new aerodrome near Washington on the Potomac at Quantico. The airship, funded with 25000 from Congress, is a flying machine using a ship’s screw propeller and modeled after birds. A previous small model flew nearly a mile before steam pressure failed.

John W Hayes Interred In East Boston Funeral

The ex councilman John W Hayes was laid to rest at Holy Cross Cemetery Malden after a requiem mass at the Church of the Assumption East Boston. Father Garrity officiated and Typographical Union No 13 members attended along with a municipal printing office committee. Floral tributes and pallbearers Fegan Hanrahan Tillman Merone Walters Lane were named.

Captain Erasmus M Weaver to join First United States Artillery

Captain Erasmus M Weaver, retired as Massachusetts mustering out officer, is ordered to join the First United States Artillery now in the South. He plans to leave Boston May 16 after completing mustering out duties for the Eighth Regiment. His G Battery sits at Fort San Jacinto Galveston Texas with the regiment dispersed along the Gulf coast.

Massachu sett regiments health and muster out praised

A veteran officer assesses Massachusetts units in the Santiago campaign noting Fifth Regiment’s superior camp sanitation with no deaths from defective camps and far fewer illnesses than nearby units.
