Secretary of the Treasury Carter Glass appeals to the public to finish funding the Victory Liberty Loan. He notes one and a half million U S soldiers abroad and warns that insufficient subscriptions would dishonor the nation. He urges all Liberty bond buyers to purchase Victory notes to ensure success.
President Wilson Premier Lloyd George and Clemenceau send a note to Orlando signaling possible settlement of the Adriatic question. They expect Italians to return to Paris while Belgians resume pressure against the peace treaty urging King Albert not to sign.
United States navy aviators prepare for a ten day tuning up as three large seaplanes set to depart soon from New York to begin the ocean crossing. The plan is to reach Trepassey base after stops along the route.
Italian delegates to the peace conference, after leaving Paris when Italy’s claims to Fiume and the Dalmatian coast were rejected, have been invited to return. Paris dispatches say Italy will rejoin and resume negotiations where they paused.
The New England Liberty Loan committee says the Victory Loan situation is critical and warns it will apply all pressure during the last week of the drive to push New England over the top.
Poestenkill, N Y reports a severe fire as an electric storm cuts wires and spreads through the town. Fire departments from Troy respond after a long motor-assisted drive. Farnam steamer company aids from eight miles away with Fire Chief Casey leading the call.
Major General Robert Alexander reported that much of the withering fire on the Lost Battalion of the 77th Division came from artillery believed by the French to have surrendered. He cited French forces as firing on the ravine where Lieutenant Colonel Charles Whittlesey and his men held out on October 7.
Lawrence May 4 stirred by reports that a certain element of the city fears unrest as authorities prepare riot control measures. Reports indicate law enforcement readiness and possible deployment of riot weapons in response to potential disturbances. Continued on page 10 third column.
