May 3 evidence in the Titanic disaster inquiry shows there was time to place women and children from the steerage into lifeboats. Seaman J Scarrett testified that he repelled many foreigners from a boat with a tiller but confirmed ample time to save all third class women and children.
Government lawyers stressed a key fact the Titanic was proceeding at 21 knots at night when warnings of dangerous icebergs were received. Attorney-General Rufus Isaacs said he had notified Sir Robert Finlay, chief counsel for the White Star Line, that the government regarded the speed figure as pivotal and would hear any contrary evidence.
In Annapolis on May 3 the Naval Academy opens the season by hosting the University of Pennsylvania varsity and freshmen eight crews in an intercollegiate boat race.

Minneapolis May 3 Ministers of the Methodist Episcopal Church split over abolishing a 40 year old church law banning dancing card playing gambling and theater circuses and horse races. Bishops argued two thirds of 3 250 000 members engaged in the diversions without sin.
Delegates debate how to regulate amusements in a church assembly. Bishops uphold John Wesley’s stance leaving amusement issues to individual conscience. A motion to refer the issue was rejected as 850 delegates prepare to vote. James J. Bartholomew voices continued remarks.
Stockton report says William A. Dorr will leave Monday for Lynn to stand trial for the murder of George F. Marsh. Lynn officials, backed by Governor Hirams Johnsons extradition papers, claim strong circumstantial evidence and a nurse will accompany the prisoner. Dr I B Ladd notes a fear induced breakdown aiding the trip.

George E. Triggs of Dorchester died suddenly in an automobile near Milton while en route from Plymouth to his Dorchester home. The Milton medical examiner attributed the death to apoplexy. Chauffeur Atherton Jr. Smith found the passenger dead in the vehicle.
Mr Triggs who planned to move into a summer cottage at Plymouth was travelling home to his wife who had been ill. On Canton road in Milton a chauffeur saw him slipping from his seat and found him dead. He was a Milton native about 50 and a Boston insurance representative.
In Northampton on May 3 the recount of Tuesday’s presidential primary shows slight gains for Taft delegates at large. Registrars also tally ballots invalidated for marking nine names, totaling forty five discarded votes.
