The German Reichstag resumed its session in Amsterdam with Dr. Johannes Kaempf condemning President Wilson’s April message as siding with a new and powerful foe. Kaempf said the United States has entered the war against Germany in the interests of mankind and justice.
The passage states President Wilson and Dr Kaempf lost sight while asserting England began a war of starvation against Germany, claiming it violated human and international rights and noting no action was taken to counter it.
In Washington on May 2, a Senate debate on food problems focused on high seed prices and food speculation. Senators Williams Nelson and McCumber denied a staple shortage, while Borah and Thomas led attacks on speculators and packers, urging swift legislation to curb profiteering.
Dr Gertrude E Kelly of New York leads a large group of Irish women to Washington to urge Congress and possibly President Wilson to back freedom for Ireland. Relatives of fallen leaders join the party including Nora Cornelly and Nellie Gifford.
London reports the weekly total of ships sunk by U boats. 38 merchant vessels over 1600 tons and 13 under 1600 tons, plus eight fishing vessels, were destroyed in the week ending Sunday.
The notice lists arrivals of all nationalities over 100 tons with totals 2716 sailings and 2690 other figures, totaling 6196. It also notes British merchantmen sunk by submarines or mines over 1600 tons including three not previously recorded, and under 1600 tons with one unrecorded. It cites British vessels unsuccessfully attacked with two unrecorded cases, totaling 24.
Lorin F. Deland died at 35 Newbury Street Back Bay aged 61. A reformer and advertising writer, he was a leading football expert who authored books and patented the flying wedge. He served as director of Massachusetts Babies Hospital and manager of the Boston Dispensary with wife Margaret Deland.
Family heirlooms jewels and 50 dollars were taken from a safe in the home of Benjamin Foss son of former Governor Eugene N Foss of Jamaica Plain. Detectives hunt a nurse girl who cared for the Foss children and a sister believed to be involved as the trail runs from a South End physician to Cambridge and out of state.
Annie Soderholm of Lynn Mass tied the knot with Nicholas Kline in Bridgeport Conn soon after meeting him. Friends in Lynn are directed to address letters to Mrs Nicholas Kline at 711 Lafayette Street Bridgeport Conn. Annie has left Lynn and its soap making to live with her husband in their Bridgeport home.
After recovering Annie from a wandering street and returning her to her father Captain E. O. Cronan head of the local detective bureau announced the case is closed. He will continue to monitor the matter and expressed satisfaction to all involved.
Cambridge school commencements will not include expensive dresses or flowers. Superintendent Fitzgerald says the program will be limited to patriotic numbers due to the war and the need for strict economy.

At Faneuil Hall last night a mass meeting voiced seven centuries of oppression but asserted Irish loyalty to America and democracy. The crowd hissed Arthur J. Balfour while cheering for the flag President Wilson and the United States. The mood shifted as songs of America and the Star Spangled Banner echoed through the hall.
The Lynn Chamber of Commerce formed a committee to investigate the alleged Lynn shoe workers lockout and to arbitrate differences between manufacturers and workers. Members are Ralph B. Bauer president Charles F. Sprague and Attorney Hiram B. Miller.
Mrs. Lucy E. Fuller 67 former vice president general of the Daughters of the American Revolution and former State regent died in Springfield today. She was active in other patriotic orders and known for her leadership.
The American steamer Rockingham was torpedoed and sunk by a German submarine off London on May 2. Thirteen men are missing while 49 Americans were aboard among 86 crew plus a naval contingent of a lieutenant and 12 sailors. The ship and cargo were valued at 3.25 million dollars and she was due in Liverpool.
Washington May 2 The Post Office Department discharged Edward J. Ryan of Boston railway mail clerk and president of the Railway Mail Association for issuing statements about the department policy to shorten runs. He circulated hand bills urging mass meetings to protest the policy claiming men were forced to move residences. The department called his statements misleading and insolent.
Secretary McAdoo announced the first offering of bonds worth two billion dollars under the Liberty Loan program. The subscription is open to every man and woman in the nation with a deadline set for June 15. This major public funding drive aims to mobilize broad national participation in support of the war effort.
The statement outlines an initial offering of 2,000,000,000 dollars in the 3 1 2 per cent Liberty Loan of 1917 dated July 1, 1917. Subscriptions run to June 15, 1917 with bonds redeemable at par and convertible if higher rate bonds are issued before war’s end.
Warren J. Clear, class of 1918, won the first prize of 50 dollars in the annual BC oratorical contest. Judges were Thomas D. Lavelle Dr. John A. Brewin and Dr. Francis J. Barnes. Clear is the alumni editor of the Stylus.

In New York on May 2 Captain Franz Rintelen of the German navy and ex representative Frank Buchanan faced trial alongside six others. They are accused of fomenting strikes to disrupt the Entente munitions trade through Labor's National Peace Council, of which Buchanan was first president, with Samuel Gompers as a key witness.
Samuel Gompers testified that he warned representative Frank Buchanan in Atlantic City in the spring of 1915 not to associate with certain indicted men who were on trial with Buchanan. The AFL president spoke to the matter while on the stand.
Miss Louise A. Kurris of 6 Linden street was voted the most beautiful young woman in South Boston at an event in Pere Marquette Hall on N street hosted by the South Boston Red Cross unit. Judges included Representative Louis R. Sullivan, Herbert A. Kenny, and Dr. F. A. Boyle. Mrs Curley announced the judges' decision.

Washington reports Marshal Joffre will supervise the training of American troops in France. The first expedition will depart as soon as feasible without delaying food and munitions to the allies. French visitors urged immediate sending of a force, and the government has accepted a likely small contingent.
An elaborate high powered wireless station was discovered on the third floor of a Beacon street and Broadway Chelsea residence near the Marine Hospital property and the Erny dock. An Edison inspector found the set while checking a meter and notified federal authorities. DOJ agents and Chelsea patrolman conducted a raid seizing the apparatus as part of a broader probe with several potential arrests expected.
