A massive blaze in Pittshurgh led to the destruction of T. C. Jenkins & Co. wholesale grocers on Liberty avenue and spread across Penn avenue. The American Press Association offices, Mayer’s glove house, Horne & Co. stores, W. P. Grier & Co. china, and several other buildings burned or were damaged. Losses feared to exceed two million dollars with extensive insurance.

Burke Philadelphia Lawyer Found Dead in New York Hotel
Peter C Burke 35 a former Philadelphia lawyer was found dead in a Hotel Bartholdi room by self suffocation with illuminating gas in a bathroom. Letters indicate he faced a divorce suit at his wife’s instigation and he had lived in Washington where his brother served as assistant pastor. Burke had studied law at Georgetown and went to New York to join his wife who had arrived March 6.

German steamer Johanna reaches Lewes with sugar cargo
The German steamer Johanna of Flensburg carrying 1500 tons of sugar from Rosario for the Delaware Breakwater arrived in tow of the Pandora from Santos via Barbadoes for New York. On April 21 she broke her tail shaft and lost her propeller and for six days after sighting no vessel. While attempting to port under sail she lost all sails in a northeast gale.
