Mayor Opposes Railroad Tunnel Without Electrified Suburban Lines
Mayor T Fitzgerald told the metropolitan affairs hearing he would not consent to a tunnel from North to South stations until railroads commit to operating suburban lines by electricity. Opponents led by W. H. Coolidge argued the $5 million cost was prohibitive while boosters cited expected transit gains alongside Elevated spending. The bill would electrify within 10 miles of a Boston terminal over several years, with broad support from civic groups and business associations.
