Cleveland March 29. Settlement of the bituminous coal miners wage dispute on a basis satisfactory to both sides was announced late tonight as practically arranged.
The document notes 170,000 miners in Pennsylvania quitting work, with regional totals of 70,000 in Lackawanna and Wyoming Valley, 40,000 in Hazleton and Panther Creek Valley, and 60,000 in Pottsville and Lykens Valley. Demands include a 20 percent pay raise, eight-hour days, union recognition, monthly union dues remittance to the national union, a stronger conciliation board, and one-year contracts. Operators rejected the new demands and the existing scale was rejected by miners after an offer to continue it.
The United Mine Workers ordered 170,000 anthracite miners in Pennsylvania to quit next Sunday at midnight over pay demands. Officials say the stoppage will cut U S coal output by about 7 083 000 bushels monthly and reduce mine payrolls accordingly.

After seven years of silence the Mattie Hackett murder case nears a breakthrough as the Maine grand jury prepares to review evidence. A claim to County Attorney Joseph Williamson alleges a woman was last seen with Mattie Hackett before her death, with another man reporting an eyewitness to the night.
A woman who was the last to see the Hackett girl is to be identified before a grand jury. A remorseful witness, after seven years, has told county attorney all he knows. Bert Raymond, whose wife was said to envy the girl, has been summoned as a witness and recently stayed near Mechanics Falls after formerly living in Readfield.
A 16 year old boy accused of luring 12 year old William Mathers Jr into woods off Mineral Spring avenue Marieville is under surveillance in North Providence R I. Police expect arrest within 24 hours as Chief George P Willis leads the investigation.
In Portland Maine on March 29 Col Roosevelt backers won a majority of delegates to both district and State Republican conventions while Taft supporters carried 1308 votes to 1447. The contest showed clear choice for Taft or Roosevelt with every voter urged to register.
Colonel Fred Hale led Roosevelt forces in a high turnout presidential caucus in Portland. Roosevelt won wards 1 2 3 8 and 9 while Taft won wards 4 5 6 and 7. Total Portland delegates stood 49 for Roosevelt and 32 for Taft with three at large to Roosevelt. The result surprised Taft supporters and energized Roosevelt backers about influence on Maine New England state results. Hale predicted a solid Roosevelt delegation to Chicago.
