Blaze On Franklin Street Leaves $20,000 Damage

A five story brick building at 81 Franklin street suffered a $20,000 blaze shortly after 11 pm. Firemen fought to stop spread to adjacent structures as flames surged from the elevator shaft and roof. Patrolman Gallagher first spotted smoke from the second and third floors, prompting box 46 alarms and a rear attack via Winthrop place. The Storer Bement warehouse lay at risk until a substantial fire wall helped prevent extension. Continued on page 16.

Lowell March 2. After a 11 hour secret conference among seven cotton corporations and Textile Council officials no settlement was reached. Notices posted pledge mills will shut down and resume only when operatives return. A 140 percent wage increase granted in New Bedford influenced talks. Local authorities discuss funding for law and order ahead of possible unrest.
