Wanamaker figures show clerks pay rise and eight hour law
Washington March 28 Postmaster General Wanamaker prepared cost estimates for changes sought by clerks in first class offices. He favors delaying the eight hour law to focus on fifteen days' leave and a higher appropriation for clerical service. Estimate shows eight hour law at 2 378 000 extra and fifteen days leave at 519 000, with large office clerical increases of 1 040 000.

Farquhar Subsidy Bill Faces Democratic Defection
General Wheeler of Alabama will oppose the bounty bill led by Chairman Farquhar. His defection leaves Curmines as the sole New York Democrat aligned with Republicans. If East Congress opponents vote against it, the measure is likely defeated. The bill sets bounty rates at 14 to 15 cents per ton for early miles and 30 cents for subsequent miles, with committee amendments adopted. It will be reported next week with a majority for Farquhar and minority for Fithian.

Allen or Stackpole Which Appointment Stirs Hope
The search for a district attorney candidate continues with Frank D. Allen of Lynn favored by some. Backing from Senator Hoar and Senator Lodge fuels hopes Colonel Stackpole might still be appointed. President and Attorney General already hold endorsements, dulling further push. Randall abandons further effort though believes Stackpole’s war record should win.
