Railroad Rate Increase Analyzed Impacts on Profits

An editor notes that railroads seek a freight rate rise of about 10 to 15 percent to offset rising wages and material costs. Using last year’s earnings, projected per share gains from rate increases are outlined for major lines, while noting costs from the Adamson act and coal prices may absorb much of the gains. The piece argues the industry needs sufficient earnings to attract capital without overleveraging, pointing to New York Central and others’ balance issues and the risk of debt growth undermining investor confidence.
