The Mohawk River overflowed the Erie Canal at Hoffmans Ferry six miles west of Schenectady, tearing a 200 foot embankment and flooding streets. Water power failed, trains halted, and darkness blanketed the city as ice damming and a 20 foot gorge increased the disaster risk.
Mrs Cassie L Chadwick known as Madame Deverewas convicted on seven counts for devising fake securities to loot banks and claim Carnegie friendship. A 10 year federal sentence followed a Boston Post exposure and bank wrecking case in Oberlin Ohio.
