Sullivan Answers On Finance Commission Service
Chairman Sullivan said he had not yet served a full term as a member of the Finance Commission and was the only paid member. The commission seeks $35,000, but spent under $28,000 last year. He noted expenses would have been higher if not for the death of the bureau of municipal research director, and the search for Ernst's successor continues without a suitable replacement.

Cuts Duty on Canned Fish
Washington March 2 The Customs Court decided a herring and mackerel case that could affect 4500 similar issues and lead to the surrender of 1 000 000 in duties and a tariff reduction on canned fish. The court ruled that herring and mackerel in bouillon tomato sauce or soused in tins are pickled or salted within the tariff meaning, with herring at one half cent per pound and mackerel at 1 cent. The government argued they were taxed at 30 percent ad valorem. The Treasury may appeal one pend ing case due to revenue impact.
