Chauncey M. Depew publicly denies any aim to seek the Republican nomination. He dismisses rumors from Albany as unfounded and says he is engrossed in business, not politics, and would not comment on a possible letter declining a nomination.
A South Boston Post forwarded an address to the President protesting the removal by Postmaster Corse of Mr. Clerke, the clerk in charge of the South Boston sub-station. The stock market remained fairly active and firm with Atchison, San Diego, Flint and Marquette noted. The Circuit Court of Michigan ruled in the Flint and Pete Marquette cases. Bell Telephone raided on the death of Chief Justice Waite.
A decree dated March 21 will authorize Crown Prince William to handle official duties and sign documents in the Emperor’s absence. The Emperor’s laryngeal illness is improving and a proclamation granting amnesty to political offenders is in preparation. Pope’s letter to Emperor Frederick expresses sorrow over William’s death and wishes health and long life. Russian and German press note improved relations and steady finances amid Austrian tensions.
Washington reports the death of Morrison R. Waite chief justice of the United States at 6 10 this morning after a brief illness marked by pneumonia and heart failure. The court adjourned, officials and family mourned, and Congress prepared to act on funeral arrangements while Mrs Waite considered burial options in Toledo Ohio and California visits.

LATE SHIP NEWS Grieverstorm March 23 reports heavy loss among shore fishermen as nets and trains wave in the storm crates. Several ships bring in few shore fish while Georgesmen land small fares and no fleet damage yet. Frozen herring nearly exhausted and sailors fear fresh supplies will lag. Vessels listed include A M Morton Hodgdon from Ipswich Bay with Pensacola voyage.
The Seventh District Democratic congressional committee met at the Essex House in Samum and elected Perry Collier of Beverly as chairman and J. H. Cheever of Manchester as secretary. They scheduled the district convention for April 18 at 10 a.m. in Lyceum Hall, Salem, to select delegates to the national convention.
Jay Gould and his party arrived in Jersey City at 11 40 PM tonight after their travel from New York.

London March 23 Cambridge is favored to win the University boat race with betting at 8 to 1 against Cambridge. The race is set for tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. under wind and water conditions. The Grand National at Liverpool today saw Playfair win with Frigate second and Ballot Box third among twenty starters.
In Ottawa the House of Commons heard Justice Minister Thompson introduce a bill to ratify the fisheries treaty delayed by Sir Charles Tupper’s illness. He called the US publishing breach a matter of confidence and noted the need to straighten the publication issue. In the Senate, Abbott signaled intent to subsidize a Canada Great Britain steamship line to carry mails, with Howland urging direct export trade to the West Indies and South America to curb American middlemen profits.
Washington observers discuss how Chief Justice Waite's death could shift the telephone case. The 8 to 3 split favored Bell with Lamarr not yet on the bench and Gray recusal due to family ties to telephone interests. Bell stock dropped 15 points in New York to 246.
