Starving Faints in Bread Line at Avery Street Soup Kitchen

A man named Frank Wilson collapsed from exhaustion in the Avery Street soup kitchen line after three hours in the cold. He was hospitalized in serious condition but expected to recover. The event coincided with a record turnout of 706 fed with hot soup, frankfurts, bread, and coffee, as the "Big Brother" movement chaired by William H. Foster expanded employment for about 40 men and announced further work at Mechanics' Hall and other sites.

Harbor Fog Delays Vessels As New Fish Pier Nears Opening

In heavy mist and snow the harbor slowed shipping with schooners and tugs delayed. The Tivves steamed in off Cape Cod Highland Light in a blizzard and aimed to anchor by daylight. Fisherman William Roberts suffered a finger injury from a trawl hook and risked blood poisoning. A week hence the first fishing vessel will enter the new fish pier south Boston as dealers shift operations and the two restaurants prepare to open. The Herman Winter arrived from New York to replace the James Whitney in service.
