Charles Smith attempted suicide by cutting his throat with a jack-knife at eight this morning in Bath Maine. This was his third such attempt.

Spies arrived in the city from Washington. Boston Cuban Club President Fuentes says Patriots seek 50 000 stands of arms and 1000 rifles to empower a fighting force. He notes Cuban volunteers ready if arms arrive and cites a Glasgow built steel steamer of 4000 tons with capacity for 12 guns and 600 men.

Fire in shed near Campbell home injures Salem firefighter

Early this morning a shed fire near Christopher Campbell's house on Shillaber street within the Peabody line was spotted by Peabody officers who alerted the Salem fire department. Fireman Robert Tanch was thrown from the steamer horses as they ran away, breaking his arm in two places on the way to the scene. The Salem department learned of the blaze only today.
