Fog halted a planned bombardment exercise in Chesapeake Bay using the battleship New Hampshire against the old battleship Texas as a target. The destruction was postponed yesterday due to unfavorable weather conditions.
Harvard President Emeritus Charles W. Eliot spoke to undergraduates on his 77th birthday claiming democracy breeds inequality while despotism and slavery enforce equality. He argued free institutions fail to level conditions and warned against racial blending, urging races to live side by side within democratic rule.

Sackett former police chief of Revere and Norwood charged the Revere force with protecting dives and sleeping on duty at the annual town meeting. He urged appointing a police chief at 1600 salary while the finance committee debated abolishing the office. The meeting approved funds for a patrol auto ambulance and a higher water board construction appropriation. Albert S. Burnham served as moderator.
In Poultney Vermont March 20 Judge F G Swinnerton discharged Camila Covino on murder charges after accepting her defense claim she acted in defense of honor. She embraced fiancé Juh Hani and left the courtroom with her father Dominic Covino.
In a crowded courtroom the 16 year old girl admitted shooting Vermillo a 45 year old boarder after he insulted her and tried to drag her upstairs. She said she grabbed a revolver from a window area and fired three times as he moved toward the door. Vermillo died March 12 after being taken to Poultney and on cross exam she stood by her story. Judge Swinnerton discharged her stating she acted to defend her honor. State's Attorney said the case would end without further expense.
Oldtown Missouri voters choose Charles Stephens Democrat over Percy B Cole Republican for mayor. Stephens wins 499 votes to 399 with results announced today in Oldtown.
At an adjourned Wakefield town meeting last night a $400 appropriation was approved to raise the daily pay of the three local police officers from $2.47 to $2.75.
The Exchange Trust Company announces a new branch at 124 Boylston Street near Tremont Street inviting customers to open a checking account. Interest is credited monthly on balances of 300 dollars and above. Main Office remains at 33 State Street.
Princess Troubet skoy seeks $3600 annual income in lieu of alimony from former husband John Armstrong Chaloner. Referee to take testimony. Chaloner deemed incompetent in New York but sane in Virginia. She cites his estate at $2.6 million and income of $33,000 with promises of life support ranging from $8600 to $6000 yearly.
George Shagorre, shoe-string seller in New York's financial district, entered National City Bank seeking $1,000,000. Police and bank staff interrupted the scene, a 20 minute struggle ensued, and he was strapped with a strait jacket and taken to Bellevue Hospital for mental examination. Vanderlip had previously received a 85 page letter from him claiming mistreatment and threatening further action for satisfaction.
In San Francisco on March 20 Judge Thomas Graham ruled against Mrs Mabelle Gilman Corey and her co heirs in their suit to claim a share of Charles Gilman’s $3 million estate. The case also involved her brother Monroe Gilman of Oakland and other sisters. Corey's departure for Paris followed the suit.
A Lynn train departing North Station at 7 21 p m collided with two empty cars and a switch engine that had backed onto track two. R D Vose and Isaac Apple, both of Malden, suffered minor injuries and a third passenger Solomon Dinar was shaken. The empty cars and locomotives were unharmed.
Count Leo Tolstoi and Edmund C. Hill visited Harvard yesterday morning touring college grounds with Nathan Haskell Dole guiding them. They rode in William Lindsey’s automobile from Boston to Cambridge and met President Lowell and Ambassador Robert Bacon before Tolstoi attended Professor Gray’s history lecture at the new hall.
In Lincoln 1200 admirers attended a complimentary dinner for William J Bryan on his 51st birthday. Guests included Champ Clark Governor Shafroth Senator Owen and Senator-elect Kern Hitchcock. The dinner emphasized Bryan as the party leader in Nebraska and nationwide with speakers voicing continued support.
Francis E. Baker a New York patent lawyer with offices in New York Washington Boston and Bangor Maine is held on $15 000 bail on three indictments for grand larceny from the estate of the late Mrs Mary Reeve Brinckle Stewart. He allegedly gained control of 50 000 to 150 000 from the executrix Miss Elizabeth Stewart and sold securities deposited in a city vault. Two siblings sought removal of Elizabeth as executrix leading to grand jury action. Admiral Stewart's descendants noted.
E M Warne, Civil War veteran, died suddenly while traveling to his Grand Army post in Waltham on March 20. Reports indicate he collapsed on the way, ending a long life of service and companionship with fellow veterans.
Governor Foss meets with Dr. Vernon L. Briggs Representative Martin L. Quinn and others to push for a legislative inquiry into alleged abuses at the state's insane hospitals. They plan an inquiry into the death of George Lawson of Lynn and discuss which committee should handle the investigation.
Representative Quinn presented the case to the Governor regarding the death of George Lawson 23 of 41 Coburn Street Lynn at Westboro State Hospital. Lawson’s wife brother and HL Nott of Lynn allege nonnatural death due to alleged abuse by inmates and request a thorough investigation. Henry W Lawson provided statements about the death and hospital conditions.
