The 146th annual meeting of the Charitable Irish Society was held at Parker House with Thomas Riley presiding. Naples becomes the latest stop on the Oregon Short Line where 10 to 15 arrests daily are jailed in a ground hole. Guards keep watch day and night to prevent escapes as rifles act as the sole locks. Any offender peeking from the hole is targeted for rifle practice and shot if heads appear.
In New Orleans on March 18 a fire alarm caused a rush for exits at Faranta's pavilion on Bourbon and Orleans. A crowd of two men, two women, a girl, a boy and a colored youth were crushed. several were sent to Charity hospital with likely fatal injuries.

Portramouth March 18 Ensign Thomas B Gay of this city states that neither Daniel George nor Mr Houghton fired the torpedo that sank the rebel ram Albemarle. Gay says he was in the cutter lowered the torpedo spar himself and that Lieut Cushing pulled the lanyard to discharge the explosive.

The 75th anniversary was observed Sunday at the Austin Street Unitarian Church with Rev. Edward J. Young of the First Unitarian Church of Waltham delivering the sermon in the absence of Rev. George W. Briggs who is in Europe. The program included choir singing and a prayer by Rev. A. B. Muzzey, a former pastor, now serving in his 2010 year.
