Shoppers packed the six floor of Houghton and Dutton's as a 10 cent Maine memorial fund display opened. A captured Kearsarge cannon turned relics and other war memorabilia filled a bivouac like space with American flags. Visitors left one dime each to subscribe. over 300 did so in a few hours at three stations.

Dr Joseph D Couch of St John N F dies in Cambridge after Harvard MD 1883. He practiced in Somerville with his brother John, moved to Cambridge in 1890s, and served on the U S Pension Examining Board appointed by President Cleveland in 1893. He led the board until health declined and held high posts in Catholic medical groups.

United States Purchase of Italian Armored Cruiser Reported

A Rome despatch says Admiral Brin indicated in the Chamber of Deputies that the United States may have bought the Italian armored cruiser Carlo Alberto. The ship is a 6500 ton steel cruiser of 325 by 59 feet with a 22 foot 11 inch draft and a 20 knot speed. Built in 1896, she carries twelve 6 inch guns, six 4.7 inch guns, two 2.9 inch guns, ten 2.2 inch guns, two Maxims, five torpedo tubes, and a crew of 460.
