Speculator Canty shoots rival in Washington street clash
Dennis Canty stock broker killed George Rye, a speculator, in front of the Western Union Telegraph office at Fourteenth and F streets near the Ebbitt House. Rye had threatened Canty and faced him with a knife before Canty fired four shots. Rye fell about twenty feet away and Canty was arrested. Rye had recent Kentucky dealings with Canty’s firm and loss of money sparked ill will.
