Market Tone Mixed Across Atlantic Ports

Net receipts at southern ports and exports to Great Britain show declines. The market reads dull at Charleston and Philadelphia, quiet at Augusta, Baltimore and Memphis, very firm at Cincinnati, quiet and firm at Louisville, firm at New Orleans and New York, with steady activity at other locations.

London Markets End Week With Cautious Tone On Stocks

The Economist notes money in demand for stock settlement but lenders cautious from heavy security losses. Rates slide, discounts quiet. Bank of England and Imperial Bank of Germany moves cause limited UK impact. Foreign and domestic securities fall, war rumors buoy sentiment briefly, rails decline while American rails firm. Continental markets show buoyancy amid London financial mood.

Transcontinental railroad rates and CP dissension in Boston traffic notes

A Chicago despatch on March 14 reports imminent dissolution of the Transcontinental association as Central Pacific resists a new tariff and demands full through-rate shares. Pacific Coast roads defend the tariff, while Union Pacific Northern Pacific and Santa Fe run independent lines to San Francisco. A Philadelphia despatch cites Pennsylvania Railroad moving 66 trains daily with about 22,320 passengers in five days, and Boston and Albany traffic volumes exceeding those numbers in peak periods.
