Boston City Council rejects mayoral beautification plan for Copley Square
Boston's City Council, meeting as the finance committee, turned down Mayor Fitzgerald's bid to beautify Copley Square and to straighten Commonwealth Avenue between Charlesgate East and West. They chose no money for these plans now, reserving action if the mayor reintroduces them. They approved loans for a new South Boston police station, a new Charles Town City Hall site court house and police station, and a separate drainage system. A Roslindale public hearing will be held to decide between a municipal building and widening Centre Street. Council President Kenny said he will oppose all luxuries until essential city needs are funded.
