In Philadelphia on March 13 the Central Labor Union directs milkmen bakers and clerks to stop work tomorrow to pressure carmen grievances. Union members are urged to withdraw funds from banks and sympathizers are asked to do the same.
The strike leaders accuse Director of Public Safety Clay and others of belittling the public impact while seeking to run the movement with public convenience. They say they will draw their lines more closely during the present week as the general strike enters its second week.
At the archdiocesan federation annual convention in the Cathedral Archbishop William H. O Connell spoke on politics praising honest poverty over wealth. Resolutions condemn The Queen of the Moulin Rouge and indecency in theatre film postcards and books. A committee will seek Mayor Fitzgerald’s aid to curb the production. Henry Wessling presided and Charles T. Daly served as secretary.
The Archbishop denounces time servers and political pandering, urging the federation to promote honest square dealing officials, regardless of race or creed. He condemns machine tactics and calls for open action while denying any party affiliation, insisting governors and mayors serve the public, not personal prejudices.
George W. Simpson of Andover secretary to the President of the American Woolen Company was arrested by Cambridge police on a manslaughter charge for the noon death of 10-year-old Timothy Lane of Cambridge. He was detained two hours, released on $2500 bail furnished by William M. Wood, and will appear in Cambridge District Court this morning.
Tane and his brother Joseph depart the Church of the Assumption after a Sunday school session joined by Jerome Crowley. The incident appears routine with no further details.
Pedro Dimatrio was taken into custody near Taft at the Laughlin funeral in Pittsburg. Detectives OBryan Golden and Dillon found a murderously sharp knife on him after he evaded cemetery gates. He offered no explanation. police say he will not harm anyone in the future.
Byron F. Bragdon former deputy superintendent of police in charge of the harbor died Saturday in Daytona Florida. He went there with his son Dr Horace Bragdon of East Boston for his health. The body will be brought home to East Boston for burial at 5 Falcon Street. Bragdon born Sept 19 1850, served in Boston police and Harbor Station 8 for years before his 1896 appointment as deputy superintendent.
March 13 report on a 25,000 firemen walkout looming across railroads from Chicago to the Pacific. W S Carter, president of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Enginemen, warns arbitration is needed to prevent a broad strike. The letter, endorsed by the union committee, targets W C Nixon of the St Louis and San Francisco railroad amid managers' rejection of arbitration.
