Labor leaders announce agreement on his proposal, declare the strike off, and order the workers to return today. The move ends weeks of labor unrest as unions resume operations under new terms. The decision follows negotiations with the employer and government mediation.
Governor Crane brokered a settlement ending a mammoth Boston strike by agreeing that freight handlers will not be forced to load or unload teams. Crane pledged to urge rules aligned with the Boston & Maine railroad practices once workers return. Strikers were urged by their unions to report to work this morning.
An official order ends the freight transportation strike after a conference with all interests. The accord, supported by Governor Crane and Boston officials, instructs all striking workers to return to duty this morning. Credit is given to civic groups and labor leaders including Oscar F. Cox and Geoffrey A. Powers for preserving peace.
Interviews highlight responses from Harrison Loring Jr of the R S Brine Corp and others. Bailey Duncan and Sargent praise unity among Governor Crane Mayor Collings labor leaders and business men, urging acceptance of the settlement as the best possible under the circumstances.
Shortly after 3 this morning the Chelsea Aldermen adjourned a hearing on charges against Chief of Police Drury. In a disorderly scene Drury called Mayor Willard a liar and the board voted 12 to 3 to remove him from office per the Mayor's action.
A leading official of the New York New Haven Hartford railroad stated last night the company does not plan to modify its loading rule at freight sheds. Management, though not quoted directly, wants it clear to the public and striking workers that any change is unlikely.
A six-horse Brine Transportation team roared into City Square Charlestown where driver William Glaney, 35, fired at youths injuring a 13 year old. He was seized by Officers Crane Rowley and Jordan and booked for assault with a loaded revolver. Powers, another Brine employee, secured the caravan’s release after later talks.
Washington forecast for Friday and Saturday indicates colder conditions on Friday with a warmer Saturday. Westerly winds shift to variable later. Eastern areas to feel the chill with a northwest to southeast trend in temperatures.
