Senate votes on supervision board and health statistics

San Francisco Merchandise Exports Rise While Treasure Falls

Exports of merchandise from San Francisco totaled near ten million dollars, up from 1860 and 1859, with domestic shipments rising about 230 percent from 1859 to 1861. England remained the top customer, and China showed steady growth, while the treasure balance declined from 1859 to 1861.

Sir George Grey gifts vast library to Cape Colony

The late English Governor Sir George Grey donates his thirty year collection valued around £15,000 to the Colonists of the Cape. The library contains ancient MSS and early typography, including a Shakespeare folio, with unique works on Australia, Polynesia, and Africa.
