In a seven hour House debate, members approved a plan to create a seven member special committee to investigate postal affairs and Bristow origins, rejecting a full department inquiry. Speaker Cannon urged order as Smith led vociferous opposition with calls for broader checks.
ST. PETERSBURG March 11 The Emperor received a message from Viceroy Alexieff detailing a naval clash near Port Arthur. Six torpedo boats engaged enemy torpedo boats and cruisers. one enemy torpedo boat was sunk by the destroyer Viastini. Stereguschtchi sustained damage and began to founder, as five of the Russian torpedo boat destroyers returned by 8 o clock in the morning.
The forecast calls for Saturday to be fair and colder in Boston and vicinity, with Sunday remaining fair and fresh northerly winds continuing.
Examiners John W. Trafton and James W. Shedd and William Munroe, head of Stone & Downer, along with three Glasgow Manufacturing Company figures, were indicted for conspiring to defraud the United States government of duties at this port. Springfield March 11 Estelle Taylor 19 was shot and killed at 11 20 pm by lover Joseph Seaton 19 who then attempted suicide with chloroform They had been dating but quarrelled recently Seaton drew a revolver from a pillow and fired once into her breast
The narrator recalls hoisting a flag on the cruiser Novik and joining the Novik and cruiser Boyarin to rescue a sinking destroyer. Surrounding enemy cruisers and approaching battleships led to the destroyer's loss, with some crew captured and others drowned. Russian casualties included one officer seriously wounded, three officers lightly wounded, two soldiers killed, and 18 wounded. At 9 o'clock, 14 of the enemy ships gathered before Port Arthur and opened bombardment with heavy guns from their battleship squadron.
A double runner carrying five Lenox High School girls crashed into a lamp post on Main street near Court House hill. Four girls were seriously injured including Haze Crosby and Cressey Henry who are not expected to survive. Kate Spencer Lacey Brown and Mansutt Smith sustained injuries. Crosby and Henry were hospitalized. The coast racing hill remains a popular but dangerous local pastime with no safety bans yet in place.
Arthur Gorham, 61, a retired Boston businessman, died at his Digby summer home from drinking poison, possibly accidental or intentional. He had wealth and brothers in New York, Boston, and Philadelphia. The body will be sent to Boston for burial.
