At Anderloes colliery near Charleroi an explosion trapped hundreds of miners. Rescue attempts have been hindered by cave-ins and flooding. Government bulletins and a royal donation are noted as families gather nearby, with up to 150 dead feared and about 400 relatives awaiting news.
London reports a mass miners’ holiday as 400000 quit work with a manifesto urging no coal from shafts. The Miners Federation aims to clear surplus coal blamed on speculators and calls for nationwide action, with a conference on March 16 to decide when to resume work.
