Trinity College trustees name Louis M. Cheeseman New York to physics chair. Rev Samuel Hart elected to fill Latin chair after Prof Holbrook resignation.
Portland March 11 The Argus will say tomorrow that the committee of the Eastern and Boston and Maine roads have agreed to report at a meeting Tuesday or an early date in favor of consolidation.
Fall River Mass. reports that at the upcoming Tuesday evening meeting of the Spinners union, work on revising the laws will continue and an election will be held.
Fire reports from Boston and vicinity describe several blazes including an ash barrel at 269 Beacon Street with no damage, a rear fire at 200 Silver Street South Boston damaging a feather bed, and a Townsend Place fire owned by Boston Gas with $25 damage. A Codman Street factory fire destroyed a building and threatened Law Bros. with substantial losses. A Dorchester Avenue glass house fire caused about 1500 in damage with insurance on stock and building. an incendiary shed fire near Institute fair building caused no damage. Team captain Louis Hull and stroke Henry Folsom lead a crew of seven returning rowers plus several veterans as they seek a Yale victory.
At Brownville wood camp terminus of the Black Hills and Fort Pierre railroad a lodging house burned at midnight. D T Drapwood reports 14 men inside. 11 named people died including James Chalmers Thos Finless R C Wright Lewis Hanson Peter Hanson A Tennecliff Harvey Wood W H Andrews Chas Hammondy Fred I Peters Samuel Hays. Four others injured. origin unknown. Loft entry and ladder aided four survivors who jumped. two may lose legs.
In New York at 11:30 am Officer Patrick Casey of the Hunter's Point police shot and killed Roundsman Richard Comiskey at the first precinct desk they shared with two officers. Casey halted two feet away and fired, the ball entering just below Comiskey's eye before he fell dead. Casey was restrained and taken to custody.
In a tense night at the jail, a prisoner showed extreme fear believing others intend to kill him. Comiskey, connected to Hunters Point fire department, is unmarried. Casey has a wife and three children. A strong guard is posted tonight amid open threats. A shoe manufacturers meeting resolved to resist Donald McKay company royalties for machine use, raising funds. The patent expired July 6, 1879, with over $3,000,000 paid since. The Japanese embassy departs Tuesday for Boston then San Francisco. Antonio Siego, in a drunken card quarrel, stabbed Graetano Capobiaco. arrest followed. Both Italians.
The Bangor Democrats nominate Fred A. Cummings for mayor. A Winnegance bass weighs 60k pounds and sells for 12 dollars and 10 cents. John Sullivan a Fort Adams soldier quarrelled with a barkeeper in a Newport liquor shop on Sunday. In drawing a revolver to shoot the barkeeper one barrel discharged. The ball pierced the back of his knee, causing a dangerous wound.
The Maine Senate concurred with the House to indefinitely postpone the liquor-law bill. A revised statutes publication resolve was approved along with an act raising Knox County attorney salary. An insurance tax bill with a relief substitute passed, and capital punishment was restored. A commission location bill for a new insane hospital was engrossed. House actions included the Maine Industrial School for Girls, spousal tort relief, county boundary lines Somerset Piscataquis, and child labor employment act.

Mr John Keyes of Neponset avenue Hyde Park found a large yellow butterfly on his window pane on Thursday morning February 8 despite extreme cold. In Helena Arkansas a flood swamped a house twelve miles south of the city. Six adults and four children were inside. the children drowned while the adults were saved after clinging to the roof for three days. The St Francis swamp holds many horses, mules, and cattle submerged in water with numerous carcasses adrift.
Ex congressman Col. John M. Thompson from this district was arrested in Butler on a charge of having raised a note from 4100 to 4000. The arrest caused great excitement but general opinion says the charge cannot be sustained. He gave bail for court appearance.

At the invitation of the East Boston ferries board, past and present directors and members of the former city government assembled Saturday afternoon at the North Side to inspect the newly completed house. Mayor Palmer and Representative were among those present.
East Boston representatives Campbell Gove Conlin and Dolan along with ex Senator James Smith Charles P Morris and Police Commissioners Burley and Jenks attended. After viewing the new building guests visited the East Boston side for a banquet. Speeches were given by Alderman Breck Mayor Palmer Dr Jenks Councilmen Foss Fitzpatrick Goodwin and Bromwich. Ex Councillors Helland Bates and Reps Gove Dolan also spoke. The new ferry house opened to the public at 4 o clock.
The late Nathaniel Thayer was honored Saturday at noon in First Church Boston with an attendance including Harvard President Eliot and numerous dignitaries from Lancaster. Interment followed at Mt. Auburn. A second funeral, for Lieut. Charles Seymour U.S.N., occurred Sunday in Charlestown with naval officers and marines bearing, service at St John’s Church, and burial planned for Greenwood Cemetery in New York. The widow remains in precarious health.
Military and Grand Army notes cover early season militia encampment plans led by Gen Nat Wales. deserters dropped from rolls include Keen Mansfield Russell Perkins Barnett Besse Pooley. Marley, city council member from ward 16, writes to Metropolitan railway president Richards about Harrison avenue conditions between the company’s trucks.

Deidie Anthony appeared in municipal court Saturday facing larceny charges for stealing property valued at 26 dollars from R. H. White’s and 87 dollars in Easter cards from A. Blick’s. She was ordered to post 1,000 dollars bail to ensure court attendance next Friday but could not meet it and was jailed. Her sick child remained in neighbors’ care.
