The new House of the Angel Guardian on Perkins Street Day Street South Huntington Avenue and Bynner Street in Jamaica Plain, formerly part of Perkins Institution for the Blind, is expected to open on September 1.
The nine acre site will host three boys houses, an industrial school building with shops and a bakery, and a power house. New facilities will include three play halls, dormitories, a chapel seating 580, and a 650 foot corridor heating all buildings. Construction begins mid April with occupancy planned later.
The House of the Angel Guardian originated with Rev. George F. Haskins who in 1851 gathered homeless boys in Boston. The foundation stone was laid on May 15, 1859, and in 1874 the Brothers of Charity took charge. A new site was bought 61 years ago, needing $100000 but raises only $500000? The 1914 annual report shows 663 boys cared for, 353 admitted, 350 discharged, and 21,000 total sheltered since 185? The program educated boys in trades and moral formation under Brothers of Charity supervision.
A facility described as a home and school for neglected and orphaned boys aims to be self-supporting rather than a place of punishment. It emphasizes care and education within a structured environment.

In New York on March 9 Attorneys for Harry Kendall Thaw failed to admit testimony on his sanity at the start of the trial for conspiring to escape Matteawan State Hospital. Judge Page sustained the prosecution’s objection during hotelkeeper William Gordon’s testimony. The ruling was understood to apply only to Gordon’s evidence.
Gordon testified about Thaw visiting his hotel during habeas corpus proceedings and stated he spoke with Thaw as with any man. On cross examination John B. Stanchfield pressed whether Thaw appeared rational at all times. The prosecution objected to timing of Gordon’s last conversation with Thaw prior to the escape.
Prosecutor argues the sole issue is the guilt of Harry K. Thaw and alleged co conspirators while defense hinges on Thaw's sanity at escape. Justice Page blocks testimony on remoteness and state seeks to finish case soon as special deputy attorney general Franklin Kennedy leads the prosecution. Evelyn Nesbit Thaw reportedly planned to testify but the defense sides with not calling her.
