The strike follows the discharge of seven freight handlers on Friday and Saturday for refusing to handle cotton at the sheds. The broader issue is the Brine Transportation Company’s refusal to recognize the Teamsters' Union or pay union wages for work under union conditions.
A massive Boston strike begins at 7 am with every union teamster freight handler clerk and longshoreman quitting work. The action cripples traffic and threatens to halt all freight movement across land sea and rail, raising staple prices and forcing the city to confront a labor confrontation linked to the R B Brine Co and NY NH I Hartford rail operations.

Superintendent Pierce and Deputy Hanscomb coordinated shifts, with 10 officers moved from Station 2 to Station 6 and Dawson and Frohock assigned to headquarters to cover duties during Captain Wyman’s illness.

All freight left at various houses has been loaded and forwarded, including the contested cotton from Saturday afternoon, and inward freight has been unloaded ready for delivery Monday morning.
Labor leaders defend the strike against the R. and Brine Company, saying the fight arose from company pressure and not union actions. They accuse management of forcing workers to unload Brine cargo at personal risk and vow to stand firm, arguing the conflict was forced by the railway orders and company policies.
