Cape Cod Changes as Winter Eases Coastline Reels
Provincetown March 9 The easterly gales this winter reshaped Cape Cod beaches with the last gale causing major shifts. The Race Point to High Head foot hills eroded 25 to 50 feet, Dead Man’s Hollow filled by the sea, and a sand barrier twelve feet high washed over. The wrecked schooner John Rommel unearthed after more than a decade. Halfway House lifeboat station now sits 35 feet from the bank instead of 100. High and Light beaches washed in, Nauset life station breached by 25 feet, and Nauset Beacon Lights bank cracked near the north tower leaving five feet to edge. A new tower soon needed. Chatham narrow beach cut through in several places. Seven miles of the government telephone line washed down between Chatham Beach and Monomoy.
