Forecast for Boston and area calls for Thursday fair. Friday brings rain and warmer with moderate wind shift. Northern New England expected fair Thursday, unsettled Friday with possible snow or rain and higher temperatures. Southern New England to stay fair Thursday with rain Friday and mild warming. Eastern New York forecast fair with slight warming, then rain Friday. A southwest disturbance over New Mexico will move east-northeastward bringing rain east of the Mississippi by Friday night. Overall, Thursday remains fair in Atlantic states and wet take region. Winds shift from northwest to easterly east of Sandy Hook.
The forecast calls for bright and fair weather with moderate temperatures that should persist through today and into tonight. No strong winds or precipitation are indicated, making for pleasant daytime conditions and cooler evening readings.
Colonel John P. Nicholson recorder in chief of the Loyal Legion and a familiar figure among Grand Army men died at his Philadelphia home after an eight week illness. He was 80 years old.
In a flood event on the Aberjona River feeding Mystic Lake, 16 year old Francis MacMillan was swept through a 60 foot culvert after their canoe was crushed against the Bacon Street bridge. Selectman George M. Byrne of Winchester clung to a branch and saved MacMillan from certain death while two companions Raymond Hooper and Robert E. McDonald climbed to safety.
The rescue was one of the most thrilling recorded in the history of the Mystic Valley Parkway. It was witnessed by Winchester selectmen Charles R. Main and Thomas R. Bateman who, with two wrecked canoeists, hauled Bryne and his semi conscious burden from the black whirlpool at the lake edge.
