Selectman Saves Teen From Flooded River Canoeists Rescue

In a flood event on the Aberjona River feeding Mystic Lake, 16 year old Francis MacMillan was swept through a 60 foot culvert after their canoe was crushed against the Bacon Street bridge. Selectman George M. Byrne of Winchester clung to a branch and saved MacMillan from certain death while two companions Raymond Hooper and Robert E. McDonald climbed to safety.

Rescue on Mystic Valley Parkway Amid Thick Ice

The rescue was one of the most thrilling recorded in the history of the Mystic Valley Parkway. It was witnessed by Winchester selectmen Charles R. Main and Thomas R.
