Debate Over Education Tax Exemption and Fire Insurance Bill

The house debated tax exemptions for educational institutions and a bill on insuring property value after destruction. Representative Mellen urged paying policy face value. opponents warned of higher rates. The body voted 41 yeas to 107 nays to reject the bill. Other measures included pension retirement for judges and a ferry-related riparian rights issue.

Driscoll Bill Defeated Then Rescued In One House Vote

In a tense session Mr. Driscoll of Chicopee fought to push his bill with support from Mr. Minton of Boston and Mr. Currier of Methuen. The judiciary committee opposed it with Mr. Selfridge and Mr. Myers voting against. The bill was declared rejected after a standing vote showed 43 to 41, but a quorum check revealed only 98 of 240 members present and the measure was moved to the next day for further debate amid talks of bringing in furniture counsel before the House.

Taxation Committee Reports On City and Real Estate Petitions

The taxation committee issued four reports. One opposed the Lynn mayor's petition to authorize partial tax payments and undivided real estate. The others, all unanimous, opposed petitions for taxation of personal and real estate of all incorporated and unincorporated areas.

Massachusetts Bill Seeks Punishment for Abandoning Destitute Parents

A hearing reviewed Senator Dono van's bill to jail adults who neglect destitute parents in Massachusetts. The debate touched osteopathists, the State Board of Registration in Medicine, and old school doctors with lively cross questions. No remonstrants appeared. President Eliot of Harvard urged against taxing properties of educational institutions currently exempt.

Milliken Appeals Jury Bribery Conviction Details

Hack Bills On Trial In Supreme Court Hearing

Supreme Court proceedings in the hack bill case involve Causten Browne and others versus the city of Boston and City Treasurer Turner. The city denies plans to pay unlawful carriage bills and contends the bills are not within the 1890 statute. Plaintiffs argue the statute allows separate inquiry into the bills to expose fraud and halt payments for rejected items. Downey Prosecution Over Milk Standards in Boston Case

Mary Downey of Pemberton square faced Municipal Criminal Court for selling milk below standard. Counsel claimed, Dr. Harrington did not deny the rule that changing milkmen triggers a 90 fine by the Milk Association. Downey testified she could not switch suppliers due to the 8 fine feared by the Milk Trust and finally obtained milk in her janitor’s name. she was found guilty but the sentence was suspended.
