The ad boasts sharp buying, prices below competitors, and a silk going at 7 cents, with a warning that the manufacturer tried to stop the sale. It invites public cooperation and notes low toilet article prices as guides for future purchases.
A historic ad proposes paying women to visit a store to see its interior. The text promises profits over three days if the initiative succeeds, stating wide interest from thousands of ladies and a belief the effort will continue beyond the initial launch.
A fragmented notice advertises a three day sale offering umbrellas, brushes, bags, knives, albums, jewelry, dolls, notebooks, soaps, corsets and more at cost. Shoppers are urged to come early on Thursday Friday and Saturday and to return for future purchases.
Notice warns Boston area drinkers about cheap interior whiskies sold as Cutter Whiskey that are vile imitations lacking age purity or flavor. It advises buying genuine Js. H. Cutter Rye or Bourbon from reputable houses in Boston Providence Woonsocket Lowell Lawrence or Fall River and to insist on the well known Cutter bottle.
Ax Spany March 7. Governor Flower commuted the sentences of Thomas Jones and William Henry Parker to life imprisonment. Jones, convicted in Rensselaer county, and Parker, in Niagara county, were to be executed in the week starting March 18. Commutations follow the judge's recommendation.
Brussels March 7. M Collet, an accountant for a Charleroi coal firm, shot himself to death. The firm’s manager, recently stationed in London, and Collet were both found to be massive defaulters, a factor believed to have driven Collet to suicide.
New York March 7. Reports say a defensive alliance forms between the New York New Haven Hartford and Boston Maine railroads. A meeting of Morgan Rockefeller and Bishop with Jones Haven and Lawrence produced an agreement to route freight through New York New Haven, with plans to cooperate in New England. The deal could sideline McLeod and alter Reading interests, hinting at a Boston Maine sale to New Haven or others.
Boston's fight for dollar gas for all reaches a head as Corporation Counsel Babson, for Mayor Matthews and 2000 Boston Post petitioners, argues before gas commissioners. He cites 45 cent cost to make gas and Bay State Gas Company price of $1 per 1000, urging rate reductions for Dorchester Roxbury South Boston and Boston gas firms. The hearing, over two hours, features witnesses, lawyers Greenough Coffin, and commissioners McDonald Towne Barker.
The three masted schooner Blomidon of Canning from St. Mare Hayti bound to Boston, loaded with logwood, put in for repairs after heavy northwest gales. Captain Potter reports a broken rudder head, washed overboard lock road, torn sails, and severe icing. Detained a week to ten days. Salvation Oil advertised for 25 cents.
