Pneumonia Epidemic Hits Fifth Regiment in Muddy Camp

From Newton March 2 a letter describes dire quarters for Company C of the Fifth Regiment. Rain and damp tents are blamed for pneumonia with fifteen percent ill. Three dead, twenty sick, tents condemned yet unchanged, mess halls repurposed as wards as soldiers plead for transfer home.

Adjutant General Distances State From Camp Complaints

Dalton said the state has no role in the Greenville camp complaints raised by Fifth Regiment members. He noted tents in use at Camp Witherell were original issue, and that Colonel Whitney refused to draw new tents from state storage. Troops faced harsh conditions and strict discipline, with tents’ boards and snow walls being ordered removed.
