Fire destroys Newton Company plant in West Somerville
A five-building factory complex owned by F. H. Newton Company at 80 to 90 Elmwood Street was wiped out in a last night blaze causing about 25000 dollars in losses. Three alarms from Somerville and alarms from Cambridge and Arlington drew fire crews who kept the flames from spreading to adjacent homes and other plants after an hour and a half. The Carr Celluloid works at 62 Gorham Street faced risk but was saved by shutters and water curtains.

MIT Discusses War Prep and Technical Service
A mass meeting at MIT explored how the institute could best aid in wartime. The plan favors students serving in technical roles rather than enlisting, with a committee to align undergraduates to national demand and to assess fitness for service. If government accepts, many chemistry students will work in labs while others become inspectors, supervisors, and assistants. An aviation discussion is planned for this afternoon with a possible aeronautical society.
