Oxen Prove Superior to Dogs in Klondike Trek

Lucius C. Pease of Malone recounts crossing the pass with his Klondike outfit using oxen. Four youthful, gentle, 1800 pound animals haul a fourteen foot toboggan with bolted bottom to resist ice and slope wear. Each vehicle carries 600 pounds of hay, 600 pounds of corn and barley, and 800 pounds of outfit for the explorers, with forty days of oxen provisions. The total outfit weighs about 8000 pounds including tools and a year’s supply for the men.
