Beacon Hill Battle Over Suburban Railroad Petition
The Boston aldermen heard remonstrants led by Dr. Oliver Wendell Holmes and Thomas Reilly against a Suburban Railroad petition to lay a double track on Beacon Street. Leaders argued to protect Beacon Hill's beauty while supporters claimed urban transit needs warrant the plan. The hearing closed with no decision, referrals to the railroad committee, and discussion of early electrical rail concepts.
