Bourne spoke on cattle husbandry and Lysander Richards on geology of the South Shore. A benediction was given, resolutions of regret over the death of President Chadbourne were read, and E F Sowaitch discussed butter and sheep before adjournment. The event was well attended with strong interest.
The Republican state convention nominated Austin Blair for the long term justice of the supreme court and Thomas J. O'Brien for the short term. For university regent, Harry B. Hutchins was chosen for the full term and Joseph C. Jones of Saginaw for the short term. The convention then broke up in confusion.
The receivers of the Philadelphia and Reading railroad and Coal and Iron companies today formally surrendered to the officers of the companies the control of the property of those corporations.
Hartfort Conn Feb 28 The republican state committee tonight elected Senator Orville Platt to the republican national committee replacing the late Hon Marshall Jewell.

The steamer Yucatan arrived from Vera Cruz bringing Gen. Porfirio Diaz former Mexican president and party. They will be presented at a reception in New Orleans today February 28.
The Pamlico returned to Norfolk with seven prisoners from the Palmetto oyster ship in Crisfield Maryland after a clash on the Potomac. Gov. Cameron’s party found 26 vessels at work near the river mouth but seized only one, which ran aground. A pursuit with musketry and cannon fire followed. three vessels escaped upstream. The Victoria J. Peed and troops stayed nearby and may return if action fails tomorrow. No casualties reported.
In New York assembly on Wednesday a bill was reported to reduce the fare on the New Haven and Hartford railroad. Other items include two illicit snuff mills on Long Island owned by Richard Strang destroyed by internal revenue officers, and Charles E. Poucher's sentence of two and a half years in state prison for fraudulent crafts.
The will of Michael Donne of Oldglass Queen's county Ireland was admitted to probate in Norristown Pennsylvania where several beneficiaries reside. A justice's certificate from Ireland states that Dunne died about a fortnight after his wake and funeral and declares this truth under the act of King William the Fourth chapter 62 for abolition of unnecessary Oaths.
In AveGusta Maine the capital punishment bill was debated. An amendment allows juries to recommend mercy to the court and grants counsel for a prisoner the closing argument. Edward W Staples was nominated by the Democrats of Biddeford for mayor. The Democrats will ratify the nomination and a reception for Gov Robie and Gen Chamberlain is planned at Norombega hall Bangor on Thursday afternoon.
The governor and council inspected the asylum for the insane in Concord on Wednesday. New Hampshire's seventh city may arise from a union of Laconia and Lake Village, with about 8,000 residents voting to seek a charter from the legislature.
