War Dept arms sale inquiry opens before Expenditures committee

Washington February 29 the House Committee on the Expenditures of the War Department opened an investigation into arms sales. Secretary Belknap cited total receipts of 9 742 942 from 1867 1871 with Executive Document 89 listing principal sales and buyers. A despatch from Taos was referenced during testimony.

Moses Taylor Arrives with Australian Mail

In San Francisco on Feb 29 the steamship Moses Taylor reached port with the Australian mails. In Nevada near Eureka twenty eight Indians were set for execution after being captured following killings. Near San Rafael a Mexican from Lower California and two Spaniards were murdered by Indians, who were later shot. In San Diego county a group of Indians supplied by whites in liquor fought, leaving Valentine and several Indians dead. the assailants pursued into the mountains.
