Despondent over unemployment and home conditions Grace Marrett 15 and Hazel McArthur 16 both of Malden tried to commit suicide by drinking iodine at Malden City Hall at 8 30 last night. They were taken to Malden Hospital where they were reported to be recovering.
Relatives say both girls had threatened self harm before. They scoured the city for money, with the McArthur girl getting 10 cents from her nine year old sister Dorothy. Hazel cut her leg to plead for iodine, then the two swallowed the bottle's contents in City Hall's women's room before starting home. The McArthur girl, daughter of Lemuel and Mrs. McArthur of 15 Willow Place, and the other girl, daughter of Mrs. Florence Marr Ott of 19 Phillips Court, were met outside their homes by Mrs. Marr Ott as she sought a physician for her stepfather Charles W. Andress.
Dublin dispatch reports Rory O'Connor and Liam Mellowes with 150 followers at the rear of the Four Courts. Heavy artillery opened fire at 3 45 am as Free State troops breached walls and took 33 prisoners. Commandant Barry, Cork Republican leader, was captured amid the fighting and casualties were reported.
A Dublin despatch says Free State forces commanded by Brigadier General Daly attack the Four Courts. After artillery and machine gun fire they crossed the Liffey from the south side via Grafton Street and bridges. The gate was breached and the inner doors toppled as rifle butts and rams broke the courtyard defenses.
Four Massachusetts schoolboys died in a drowning incident while on the first days of their school vacation. The tragedy occurred as they enjoyed leisure time near the water, and authorities noted it as a fatal accident during a holiday outing.
