Riots and Skirmishes Shake Brussels Grande Place

In Brussels on June 2 crowds clashed at Grande Place with drawn swords and stones. Rioters hurled paving stones in Rue Royale while civic guards and police struggled to restore calm. Several wounded, two bullet wounds reported, five arrests, troops called out, public prosecutor stationed at Hotel de Ville. One man wounded rumored to have died.

Great Parade of United Workmen in Boston Torchlit March

The Ancient Order of United Workmen paraded through Boston last evening with nearly 10 000 members, torches, bands and banners. Spectators lined Beacon Exeter Commonwealth avenues to witness the procession, which started at Walnut and Beacon streets and ended at City Hall. Mayor Quincey and grand lodge officers reviewed the marchers as divisions passed in precise order.

Fire destroys carpenter shop near Ma Hope station

A $900 blaze last evening damaged a two story frame building near the Ma Hope railroad station. The site housed Frank Sittig’s carpenter shop. The cause of the fire is unknown.

Harvard Wins Three Varsity Races Over Yale on Thames

Harvard secured an unprecedented intercollegiate sweep on the Thames by winning the varsity eight, varsity four, and freshmen eight-oared races against Yale in favorable conditions. The Crimson set a two mile record in the Yale four with 10 minutes sis, though not an intercollegiate mark due to Cornell holding the four-oared record. Over 15,000 spectators watched the afternoon events, with the varsity eight finishing 6 1/2 lengths ahead after the four and freshmen races.

NUN SUFFOCATED IN CONNECTICUT CONVENT FIRE

A convent fire at Sacred Heart on Columbus avenue New Haven Conn June 29 caused Sister Mary Aloysius to suffocate and damaged the building about 3000 Twenty sisters were in residence all escaped except the deceased. The blaze began in the basement laundry and spread upward via dumb waiter shafts to the top floor.

Plant Investment chief eyed as Plant system successor

Savannah June 29 local reports say R C Erwin vice president of the Plant Investment Company is expected to succeed the late Henry B Plant as president of the Investment Company and also as president of the Plant system of railroads.
